6 Tips to Protect Your Instagram
1. Use Strong, Unique Password
Let’s understand anybody can know your username easily if they have to hack you. So you are only left with a Password. Your password is your first line of defence against unauthorized access Right?
- Creating a Complex password means it should contain Uppercase, lowercase, and special characters.
- Avoid passwords that can easily associated with you such as your name, phone number, birthdate, etc. These are the most common mistake that leads to hacking.
- Thirdly, avoid using the same password across all social networks. If one account is hacked, all other accounts will be hacked. Just like we say don’t keep all eggs in the same basket, here we say don’t keep the same password in all baskets…Did you get that?

To enable 2FA on Instagram
- Go to Settings and activity
- Tap Account Center
- Under Account settings -> Select Password and security
- Click on Two-factor authentication and follow the prompts to set it up using either SMS or an authentication app like Google Authenticator.
3. Be cautious with 3rd Party Apps
Many third-party apps request access to your Instagram account to give a seamless experience. Make sure to only give access to trusted apps and regularly review which apps have access to your account.
Steps to Manage Authorized Apps:
- Open Instagram and go to your profile by tapping your profile picture in the bottom right corner.
- Select Settings and Activity
- Tap Account Center and Select Security
- Manage Apps and Websites:
- In the Security menu, look for Apps and Websites. Tap on it.
- Review and Remove Apps:
- Under Active, you’ll see a list of apps and websites that currently have access to your account. Review this list and tap on any app you want to remove access for.
- To remove access, tap Remove next to the app or website you want to disallow.
4. Beware of Phishing Scams
Phishing scams trick you into entering your login credentials into fake apps or websites that will look like Instagram. So when you enter your credentials they will receive it at their end and use it on Instagram to get account access.
So before entering Instagram login details make sure to undergo this checklist
- Verify URL – Always check the URL of the website, it should be the same as “https://www.instagram.com“. If you find any difference, even a minor one, avoid it.
- Ignore Suspicious Links: Do not click on links from unknown sources or unsolicited messages.
- Report Suspicious Activity: Use Instagram’s built-in reporting tools to alert them of potential phishing attempts.
5. Monitor Suspicious Activity
If you notice any suspicious activity in your account, the first thing you should do is reset your password. If your current password is ever compromised, resetting the password will take the access back from hackers.
You can also check the Login Activity
- Go to Settings and Activity.
- Tap Account Center
- Choose Security and Select Login Activity
6. Secure Email ID
Securing email IDs associated with Instagram is as important as securing an Instagram account. This is because if someone gets access to an email account they can simply reset the password and get Instagram account access.
So make sure to avoid sharing email address passwords or someone from trespassing. For additional security, you can simply enable 2FA in your Email ID account as well.
