Harwell’s journey with Smash Mouth began in 1994 when he co-founded the musical band with three other members. Their swift rise to fame included a UK Top 20 hit with their debut single, “Walkin’ on the Sun,” and their first album, “Fush Yu Mang,” eventually achieving double platinum status in the United States.

Smash Mouth’s distinctive sound combined elements of rock, pop, ska, and lounge music. Their iconic track, “All-Star,” released in 1999, reached the Top 5 in the US and gained lasting popularity, notably featured on the Shrek movie soundtrack. To this day, it has amassed nearly a billion streams on Spotify.

The accompanying album, “Astro Lounge,” also achieved success, reaching the Top 10 in the US. However, amidst the band’s peak of fame, Harwell faced a personal tragedy when his six-month-old son passed away from leukaemia. Smash Mouth released five more albums, with their most recent, “Magic,” coming out in 2012.

In 2021, Steve Harwell made the sincere choice to sunset his music career. A decision that provoked a mix of emotions from his fans. Fans were both saddened and empathetic to the difficulties he had been confronting.

Harwell wrote an open and heartfelt message to his dedicated fans and supporters. He candidly revealed the profoundly personal motivations behind his retirement, expressing, “I’ve made every effort to overcome my physical and mental health challenges and to perform one last time for you all, but regrettably, I found myself unable to do so.”
