Novak Djokovic is eyeing his 24th Grand Slam win after entering the finale of the US Open 2023. He played against a surprise semifinalist named Ben Shelton, who is just 20 years old and not seeded. Djokovic won the match with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(4) and has now reached his 10th US Open final. In the final, he will face the winner Daniil Medvedev, another finalist, and the winner of the other semifinal between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev.

Shelton, who is left-handed, has a powerful and crowd-pleasing playing style. He served at speeds of up to 149 mph and hit his forehand with a lot of force. Shelton’s plan was to use his power to disrupt Djokovic, who is much more experienced and accomplished.

Even though the young American gave Djokovic a tough challenge in the final set. Djokovic had some uncharacteristic moments of uncertainty. In the end, Shelton was overpowered and couldn’t match Djokovic’s skill and experience.

Djokovic played like an expert bomb defuser, carefully handling the powerful shots of the young American. Shelton’s strong hits and serves disrupted Djokovic’s usual rhythm, making it hard for him to dominate the match completely. However, Djokovic found his groove, especially during crucial moments like the final-set tiebreak.

Djokovic broke Shelton’s serve early in each set, preventing the American from gaining an advantage. And exciting the home crowd, who hoped for an upset. In the middle of the final set, Shelton’s impressive left-handed shots, aggressive net rushes, and forcing Djokovic into rare mistakes got the crowd cheering. Even when Shelton was behind in the final set, he didn’t back down.

Shelton managed to break Djokovic’s serve to even the score at 4-4. And had a chance to win the set on Djokovic’s serve but couldn’t capitalize. However, he broke Djokovic again to force a tiebreak, briefly giving hope to the home fans.

After the match, Djokovic said, “I thrive on these kinds of matches, the ones that motivate me to work as hard as the young players.”

Throughout the match, Shelton couldn’t maintain the consistency needed to match the experienced Djokovic. He made 43 unforced errors compared to Djokovic’s 25.

Before the match, Shelton believed his advantage, if any, was that he and Djokovic had never played against each other, allowing him to introduce different and disruptive elements into the game. While Shelton did trouble Djokovic in the final set, Djokovic eventually figured out how to counter Shelton’s evolving playing style. Djokovic, a three-time US Open champion, ended Shelton’s impressive run at the tournament.

Looking ahead to the final on Sunday, Djokovic said, “I still have energy in my legs and something more to contribute to the sport.” The US Open final Men singles between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev is scheduled for Monday 11th Sept 2023 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
