Australia’s oldest person, Catherina van der Linden, who was the resident of South Australia, has passed away at the age of 111. She died on January 26, 2024, at the aged care facility in Adelaide, South Australia, where she had been living.

Originally from the Netherlands, she migrated to Australia in 1955 with her young family. She was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother before left the world.

Catherina van der Linden, along with her husband and young family, moved to Australia in the 1950s. Over the course of her life, she balanced various roles, including working in nursing, as a clerical assistant, and even trying her hand at grape picking for a season.

Known for her generosity, Catherina dedicated time to volunteer with Meals on Wheels in the Adelaide Hills area. Besides her diverse career paths, she also made significant contributions to her community through her selfless efforts.

In 2019, Catherina relocated to Southern Cross Care’s West Beach Residential Care home. She quickly became a source of inspiration for her fellow residents, serving as a role model for healthy aging.

As per her wish, her body was donated to the University of Adelaide’s Body Donation Program. The donation aims to contribute to medical science and research, furthering knowledge and advancements in the field.

Additionally, Catherina van der Linden previously held the title of being the oldest Dutch person globally.

In August last year, Catherina van der Linden shared, “I push myself sometimes when I’m getting a bit tired and I think it’s about time to do something to yourself to see that you still have that energy that you had before. I still go on the bike, sometimes for 10 minutes, and that is a long time to spend on the bike.”

South Australia’s Premier, Peter Malinauskas, expressed his condolences, saying that his thoughts were with the van der Linden family. He recalled meeting Mrs. van der Linden on her 111th birthday last year, describing it as one of the greatest moments. He highlighted her remarkable story of migrating from the Netherlands to Australia and raising her beautiful family.

Here is a beautiful picture that captures several generations all together.
